A January 10, 2012 press release from the Department of Labor and Employment

With over 64,297 job vacancies as of yesterday, Phil-Jobnet is not far from becoming the country’s premier online source of information on employment opportunities for job seekers this 2012.

Also, with about 7,805 advertised skills for hire and 119,463 job applicants, Phil-Jobnet is also poised to become the employers’ main source of workers to fill up their vacancies during the year.

This was the gist of the statement of Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz, who yesterday bared the available employment opportunities in the new year.

In her first media briefing for 2012, Baldoz said that local vacancies still dominate the opportunities advertised in Phil-Jobnet, as she said that recent vacancies posted in the site reflect the variety of available jobs in the local job market. She also said the increased number of vacancies in the government’s online job matching and job search facility reflects the level of confidence of employers in it.

Job postings in Phil-Jobnet have reached over 100,000 in November 2011 as a result of Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) campaign in the community level that encouraged employers to use the facility to advertise their need for workers and for workers to use the system to search for work.

She said these recent job postings include industrial cadet engineers, checkers, delivery drivers, mechanical engineering technicians, accounting assistants, air-conditioning technicians, machinists, quality control assistants, inventory clerks, accounting staff, sales professionals, electricians, cashiers, graphic artists, telemarketers, and delivery helpers.

The labor and employment chief also said that the top 50 vacancies in Phil-Jobnet, in terms of the number of workers needed, also mirror the bright prospects for job seekers who qualify for these jobs, such as call center workers, sales clerks, general electricians, dealers, merchandisers, service crews, general carpenters, welders, production/factory workers, cashiers, company drivers, customer service assistants, masons, office clerks, salesmen, baggers, police officers, plumbers, automotive mechanics, domestic workers, promo salespersons, mechanical engineers, painters, information technology (IT) specialists, technical support staff, accounting staff, human resource development assistants, staff nurses, waiters, graphic designers, supervising machinists, IT consultants, telemarketers, janitors, utility workers, professional tutors, data encoders, truck drivers, civil engineers, sales associate professionals, security guards, air-conditioning technicians, sales and marketing assistants, laborers, delivery helpers, production machine operators, car drivers, accounting clerks, and office cashiers.

There are tens of thousands of these jobs in the local economy, and job seekers are advised to arm themselves with appropriate labor market information before they venture into their dream jobs.

“Applicants should also ensure they are armed with the proper qualifications. If they feel they need some training or [need to] acquire additional knowledge and skills, they should do so at once,” she said.

She also said a visit to the site (http://www.phil-jobnet) and the website of the Bureau of Local Employment, which administers Phil-Jobnet, will be most helpful, as these sites contain useful and valuable information that will increase their employability.

Phil-Jobnet, Baldoz said, is undergoing re-engineering not just to cover the job matching facility, but also to make it as the labor market information portal of the government that is capable of housing the critical supply and demand database systems, such as the DOLE Data Warehouse and the National Skills Registry System.

Re-engineering Phil-Jobnet is part of the strategy of improving access to employment opportunities as embodied in the Labor and Employment Plan 2011–2016.
