Philippine Standard Time -
A year after its creation, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) unveils three projects that are envisioned to provide fast and efficient delivery of government services to citizens throughout the country.
On June 23, the DICT will unveil its National Broadband Plan (NBP), reintroduce the free wi-fi project called Pipol Konek, and launch the National Government Portal or gov.ph. The event is part of a series of activities celebrating the National ICT Month 2017, with the theme, “ICT for a Better and Safe Philippines.”
The NBP provides the blueprint for a broadband infrastructure that will interconnect government offices across the country and enable the citizens to gain access to telecommunication services, especially in remote areas. Through the Pipol Konek or Free Wi-Fi Internet Access in Public Places (FWPP) project, the Philippines is expected to achieve digital literacy. The government portal or gov.ph, on the other hand, will serve as a single website for all government information, transactions and services.
Launching the said projects will facilitate the development of an ICT-enabled nation geared toward sustainable socio-economic growth, the DICT said.
Apart from the launching event, the ICT Month organizing committee will hold various activities that showcase individual services of the department’s programs, such as eInnovation, Integrated Government Philippines (iGovPhil), and National ICT Competency Management (NICM).
Among the scheduled activities are workshops promoting “technopreneurship” and ICT-enable professions; digital literacy training for out-of-school youth; information caravan; and free training on programming and content management system. The DICT will also host a three-day Open House event from 19-21 June 2017 to inform the public of the department’s services, programs, and projects.
On June 9, the 1st anniversary of the Department will be celebrated through a thanksgiving mass to be held at the DICT head office in Diliman, Quezon City. Field operations office clusters will be connected via live streaming during the said event.
Republic Act 10844, the law creating the DICT, was signed in May last year and took effect 15 days later.
